History

Childhood
Youngest of six, Jonah was born into a closeknit, conservative family that was part of a fundamentalist community. Considering it was all he ever knew, he didn't realize it wasn't necessarily a normal way of life — it was normal for them. Their family had a farm, a large expanse of nature that Jonah loved to explore when he was little, though exploration quickly turned to chores and working once he was big enough to take it on.

Everyone in his family was home schooled, some with a local group through their congregation but mostly at home, though that made it easy to fudge through it, especially when there was work to do around the farm. It wasn't exactly an education, in hindsight, but even if it was, Jonah only went through eighth grade before stopping completely to help out on the farm instead. That was around the time his next youngest sibling got married and he was the only one left at home.

Jonah was around seventeen when he started (silently, to himself) questioning things. As much as he didn't know what else to believe, what else to think, he had doubts that kept nagging at him. It was difficult to try and parse together any of it when his whole life, world, education, it had all been based in what he was starting to question. He started taking long bike rides to the library under the guise of meeting with an acquaintance when really he was sneaking onto the internet and trying to figure things out. One rabbit hole led to another, then another, and he found a forum full of people who'd once been in the same place he was.
San Francisco
Getting to San Francisco turned out to be the easy part, a two day bus trip that gave Jonah window views of a wide swath of the country. There were plenty of nerves that kept him awake, anxiety and excitement — mostly anxiety. It was that intense feeling of no turning back and the permanence of what he'd done. Not that he was second guessing, he was sure of himself, but the unknown could be scary.

The city was so big, overwhelming. He'd expected it would take some time to get used to a new place, a new life, but it took longer than Jonah expected. Unfortunately, it was also longer than his friend Samuel expected too. The apartment was too small, Jonah wasn't able to find a job, and with no money to his name it meant he ended up in a shelter. Not the worst situation he'd ever been in. It actually turned out alright, though Jonah knew it would eventually. He got an apprenticeship with Farming Hope, making good use of his farming experience — on a much smaller scale than he was used to. Plus he learned how to cook, which was a definite bonus! He found a job with a local farm, both working there as well as manning the booth at the farmer's markets, and got a room of his own in an apartment.

It's still a learning experience, undoing the indoctrination he went through the majority of his life, and learning actual information rather than what he'd been taught. The public library is one of his favorite places, as big and overwhelming as the city itself, but Jonah liked it. One step at a time, one book at a time, making it on his own.
